The Leather To Brush Story

Most of you know me as an accessory designer/ maker for a number of years. 15 years, to be exact although I have not made a bag in almost a year now.

Just before COVID, we celebrated out 10th anniversary and then the world shut down. During that time my accessory practice naturally evolved into a new form - I felt compelled to create meaning to the supplies I already had, uncertain if I will be ale to acquire the materials or access the sales venues I had enjoyed for so long. I also craved new ways of expression amidst various changes in my personal and family life.

In this post I will address your frequently asked questions about the change from leather to brush.

Q: What Happened?

A: A combination of major family circumstances and my own health prompted me to shift my priorities. I am no longer able to travel to in-person shows or prepare regular shipments retailers. I am needed at home, and also have to focus on nurturing my own body and health. Maintaining a handmade accessories label, that requires high volume of work did not suit my life anymore.

Q: Well, What About Accessories?

A: I will continue to make handbags, absolutely. I still love leatherwork, even though my hands no longer do (looking at you, carpal tunnel!). There will be fewer, but special pieces, inspired by my outdoor pursuits and storm-watching lifestyle. Rather than following the seasons of retail, I will create these when I feel inspired. Leather is timeless after all! Our collector email subscribers will be the first to know! (Subscribe!).

Q: Why Painting?

A: It is gentle on my hands, and is very therapeutic in dealing with the demands of life, such as caregiving, studying and managing big things in general. Storms are a way to release emotions and reconnect with nature and own resilience. Painting also enables me to save some energy for gardening and property maintenance, which is required here in the wilds :) .

Q: So, Now What?

A: I hope to build a low-key practice as a multidisciplinary artist, where I get to enjoy all these creative activities and a balance with other life’s demands & joys. I hope to partake in 1-2 local events per year, maybe, a studio tour and get to know those interested in my pursuits. You will find me here - do not hesitate to drop me a line.

SEE YOU AROUND,
